For Carnegie Mellon University, we have 2 separate faculty exchange programs. Thus, all students choosing this institution should note the following arrangement:

• Department of Social and Decision Sciences (SDS) – Exchange-out for Fall semester only
• Tepper School of Business - Exchange-Out for Spring semester only

Students are not able to request a change in school/dept after accepting exchange offer.

English Requirements
An English requirement is needed for applicants to CMU. TOEFL (recommended) score report must be submitted before deadline of the exchange application. Please refer to the below for details of acceptable English scores. 

TOEFL: For exams taken before January 21, 2026: 96 iBT, with no one sub-score less than 24 (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing)
For exams taken after January 21, 2026: a minimum overall score of 5 or above, with sub-score of 5 or above in each section.
Expired TOEFL exams meeting the scores above, can be accepted if used for HKUST admissions.

IELTS: a minimum score of 7

(**IELTS score of 7.0 with no less than 6.5 on each band score can also be accepted)
