PMLP 2023

Two years in a row, the Business School has supported the Project Morals & Money Leadership Program (PMLP), to promote morals and financial education.

This year, 300 F.1 - F.6 students from 90 secondary schools participated in the 3-day event during Aug 9-11, 2023 to attend a series of insightful sharing sessions given by 12 industry leaders from the finance, innovation, business and education sectors, learn from experienced corporate mentors and engage in a Hackathon Presentation. They also had a chance to experience the university dormitory life at HKUST!

The PMLP connects HKUST Business School with the high school community and we’re happy to contribute in nurturing our future business leaders!

Business Youngstars (BYS) in Summer 2023

BYS in Summer 2023 is a two-day day camp offered by the HKUST Business School during 15-16 July. HKUST Teams Shine in Case Competition

Two teams of our undergraduate business students won the 1st runner up trophy and the Best Presenter in the Hong Kong Joint University Case Competition (HKJUCC)! Hurray! JUCC competition enables students to strengthen their case competition techniques and facilitating mutual learning. Participants were given 48 hours to crack a case on “Xiaomi: At a Crossroads” to revive investors’ confidence in the case company. Congratulations to the two teams!

Who doesn’t need snacks as spiritual food when one is under stress at work or study? Inspired by his job in the bank, John Pang (BBA, class of 2012) decided to give up his stable income and bright career prospect to co-found an online snack shop, “Lingsik” with HK$200,000. After seven years of hard work, Lingsik not only leads the industry but also keeps growing amid the COVID uncertainty.

Make an Impact l Women in Business

A group of business students found the Women in Business (WIB), aiming to empower young women to smash the glass ceilings in society. Funded by the HKUST Entrepreneurship center, WIB offered a semester-long program to introduce female professionals to mentor HKUST students. Their collaboration with the Junior Chamber International Hong Kong also drew attention from corporates, including multinational corporate Facebook (HK), to pledge their support to women in the workplace. They also join hands with overseas student groups who share the same vision, including the University of California at Berkeley and that in other Asian countries, to make a real impact on society.

Champion in Macro Business Simulation (MBS) Ecase Competition 2021

A team of Year 2 students from ACCT, ECON, FINA and QFIN brought the trophy at the (MBS) Ecase Competition 2021 back home. After six rounds of competitions and presentations, the team Binnovator stood out from the other 42 teams from 22 schools from Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan, China, China, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia won the championship title with their innovative business idea and rigorous analysis as well as execution plan!

Curriculum Update for 2021/22 intake and thereafter: Extended Major in Artificial Intelligence 

Artificial intelligence (AI) is widely used in today’s business. For example, personalized recommendations on Instagram based on your browse history; Burberry’s use of AI-powered image recognition to combat counterfeit goods; BMW’s adoption of AI to help make decisions throughout the entire business from engineering to after-sale services, and the list goes on and on!

Students of 2021 intake and thereafter, who wish to build up practical knowledge in AI on their business specialization. can opt for the extended major of Artificial Intelligence after declaring their 1st business major at the end of the 3rd term of study. Students of all business majors, except jointly-offered majors (i.e. BIBU, MAEC, RMBI, SGFN) and General Business Management,are eligible to apply.

The quota would be 30. The extended major in AI is designed for students with fundamental knowledge in calculus, statistics and programming who want to learn solid knowledge in business disciplines as well as innovative applications of AI in their major areas. This extended major approach allows students to finish their study within a four-year timeframe with a well-defined study pathway, and graduate with a title bearing both the traditional major subject they selected, and the extended major in AI. Students in the extended major program are required to complete 20+ credits. The curriculum includes cross-disciplinary seminars, a design thinking course, a capstone project etc.

New UG Program for 2022/23 intake and thereafter: BSc Sustainable and Green Finance

Since 2007, over USD1.2 trillion has been invested from all over the world to advance the global transformation of energy to renewable energy by the end of 2020. To prepare our students for the future of finance, the pioneering Business School will launch, in collaboration with the Division of Environment and Sustainability HKUST, the first-of-its-kind Bachelor of Science in Sustainable and Green Finance (BSc SGFN) for 2021 intake and thereafter.

China’s annual issuance scale has remained above RMB200 billion, and the cumulative issuance scale ranks second in the world. In 2021, the scale of China's green finance business is expected to reach about RMB16 trillion. Hong Kong SAR has made significant progress in the green finance market, with policy research, drafting of green finance codes, and leading market funds to support public and private institutions investing in green and low-emission activities.

Students of 2021 intake who meet the program requirement may apply for enrolment in the 2022/2023 Major Selection Exercise. Intake quota would be 30. Required courses cover areas of Business & Finance, Environment & Sustainability, as well as Sustainable and Green Finance disciplinary electives. More program details will be announced in due course.

Grand Slam Success in Case Competitions

Who would have thought that more good news would come after the winning streak in the compeitions featured last month! Our student team brought the trophy and the Best Speaker Award back from the International Case Competition at Maastricht after two intensive case cracking sessions with the other 15 top-notch universities in April. Earlier in June, four members of Case Analysis Team competed with universities from 7 places and earned the champion title with their two-pronged strategy, leveraging the family concept deeply rooted in Hong Kong peoples’ minds to acquire and retain the HKUST International Case Competition’s corporate sponsor WeLab Bank’s customers. Big congrats to the teams!

Two More Trophies Back Home 2021

Our Case Analysis Team has brought two more trophies home! A four-UG student team placed second in the Central European Case Competition 2021! The Team has spent months on intensive training and extensive industry research before the 24-hour case cracking of a state-owned utility company looking for business expansion. Another milestone on the international stage has been achieved that HKUST Team placed first and third in the 12-hour and 24-hour case respectively and overall 2nd place in the RSM Star 2021!

Winning Record at a Joint University Case Competition

Our undergraduates competed with the other twelve teams from CityU, CUHK, HKU. We didn’t only win the Championship and the Best Presenter Award, we also snapped up the first, second, and third runner-up titles! 

The competition consists of a Preliminary Round and a Grand Final, with 16 teams from CityU, CUHK, HKU, and HKUST competed in 4 divisions in the preliminary round, the best team from each division then entered the grand final.

All 4 finalist teams come from HKUST Business School, and the champion will be offered internship opportunities in NWS from June to August 2021. Congratulations to the teams!

A resounding success - HKUST Virtual Information Day 2020

HKUST’s first-ever virtual Information Day was held last Saturday (October 17, 2020). Over 7,000 local and 1,000 international participants paid a virtual visit to our beautiful campus, mingled with our admission officers and student representatives in the booths, and attended live sessions. The event was a resounding success!

The Business School was of great interest to the public, with nearly half of the registrants indicating interest in our program offerings.  Over 1,000 attended our live admission talks, and 1,800 attended our ten program talks, all of which featured live Q&A  with our dedicated faculty, energetic students and passionate alumni. Participants walked away with fresh insights, a holistic picture of the Business School, the admissions requirements, and what the programs of their choice have to offer.

For JUPAS applicants, you are strongly encouraged to put our program(s) in Band A in your JUPAS application by the application deadline of December 9, 2020 (Wed) if you wish to be considered for an admission interview.

For students holding international qualifications (i.e. Direct Entry applicants), the early round application deadline is November 20, 2020 (Fri) and the main round application is January 14, 2021 (Thur). Business YoungStars is open for applications for the Class of 2021! Sign up by November 19, 2020, for our 1-year business school taster program specially designed for secondary 4 and 5 students (or equivalent) who are interested in in business studies. Apply now to gain first-hand experience of what it is like to be a well-rounded business student at HKUST Business School.

Through attending 6 half-day mini-lectures across major business disciplines and enrichment workshops throughout the year with our best and brightest, Business YoungStars will:

Enjoy a series of exciting learning and networking activities;
Explore our 8 business disciplines and deepen your insight about business in the real world;
Familiarize yourself with our world-class teaching and immerse yourself in the university experience;
