Minimum Entrance Requirements For Business Programs

In order to be considered for admission to the Business School, applicants are required to achieve the following minimum grades in four core subjects plus two electives.

Option B: Using (2 x Eng) + (2 x Math Comp) + (1.5 x best of M1/M2/Econ/Chem/Phy) + best 3 other subjects
= (2 x Eng) + (2 x Math Comp) + BAFS + Geography + (1.5 x M1) + Liberal Studies
= (2 x 5.5) + (2 x 4) + 8.5 + 7 + (1.5 x 4) + 5.5
= 46

We will take the higher score: Option B score 46 (Maximum attainable score: 72.25)

Bonus Points and Interview

Subject bonus

Bonus points will be awarded to the next best subject (i.e. the 7th subject)^ from:

  • Core or elective subjects; or
  • Other languages; or
  • Applied learning subjects

^Remarks: Level 3 or above (or “Attained with distinction” for Applied Learning subjects) is required for bonus point calculation

Interviews / extra bonus points

Global Business (JS5313), Economics and Finance (JS5331), Quantitative Finance (JS5332), Risk Management and Business Intelligence (JS5814) and Sustainable and Green Finance (JS5822)

Interview is required for admission to the five programs listed above (JS5313, JS5331, JS5332, JS5814 and JS5822). The interview performance will be incorporated to the final admissions score. Selected applicants from the JUPAS Band A pool will be invited to attend respective program interview starting from late May, after the HKDSE examination. Final Band A applicants whose HKDSE scores meet respective program shortlist requirements but were not shortlisted before HKDSE results release will be invited to the make-up interviews in July/August, after the release of HKDSE result. 

Other Business programs

Final Band A applicants may receive extra bonus points from either interview or their OEA/500-word personal statement (named "additional information" on the JUPAS from).

The extra bonus points will apply to our Business programs (except JS5313, JS5331, JS5332, JS5814 and JS5822) included in applicants’ final Band A choices.

Selected candidates from the following will be invited for interviews & engagement activities:

  • Applicants from the JUPAS Band A pool (interviews & engagement activities in May-June)
  • Participants of HKUST activities like Business YoungStars, Business Summer Camp and Summer Institute (Business courses)

Note: The median and lower quartile may change from year to year depending on the pool of applicants. For Economics and Finance, Global Business,  Quantitative Finance, Risk Management and Business Intelligence and Sustainable and Green Finance, HKDSE score is a major factor but not the sole factor for admission.

                      In response to the new grading system for the revised Liberal Studies (currently known as “Citizenship and Social Development”) subject of the HKDSE, our minimum entrance requirements of the four core subjects will be revised from “4332” to “433A” (Attained (A)). Best 5 subjects, including English and Mathematics and excluding Citizenship and Social Development, will be considered in admission score calculations with program-specific subject weightings.
