Minor Programs

The School of Business and Management offers three minor programs.

Minor in Business

Objective

Looking to broaden your university experience?

If you are following your passion in science, engineering or other interdisciplinary programs, but also want to gain a basic understanding of business, the Minor Program in Business is the right program for you. Get your Business Minor in the HKUST Business School so you can diversify your studies and gain essential business skills to complement your field of study.

Eligibility

Take advantage of the opportunity to gain fundamental business knowledge at the HKUST Business School to complement and enhance your studies in science, engineering and other interdisciplinary programs.

To apply for a minor program, you must meet the following admission requirements:

  • Must have completed Year 1 of your study.
  • Must have achieved a cumulative grade average (CGA) of 2.5 or above.
  • Must have attained one of the following English qualifications:

    1. CORE 1403/CORE 1404 or LANG1003 (applicable to student cohorts admitted prior to 2022-23): B- or above

    (Students admitted in 2022-23 and onwards must take CORE1403/1404 to fulfill the language requirement while students admitted prior to 2022-23 who successfully got credit transferred for LANG1003 have fulfilled this language requirement.)

    2. IELTS^: 7.0 or above (with no sub-score lower than 6.5)

    3. TOEFL Internet-based^: 100 or above, and 24 or above on Writing

    ^Students need to have taken the IELTS/TOFEL after CORE 1403/CORE 1404 or the LANG1003 course grade has been released to qualify for these alternative options. The TOEFL or IELTS must be obtained in the most recent two years at the time of application.

  • Must NOT already be pursuing any of the following programs:
    • A degree program at the School of Business and Management (including BIBU, MAEC & SGFN)
    • Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management
    • BSc in Risk Management and Business Intelligence
    • Additional Major in SBM

Program Requirements

Students should take a minimum of 6 courses (18 credits). Among the 6 courses, at least 4 must be chosen from the Business Fundamental Electives and a maximum of 2 from the Business Advanced Electives. Click here for the two lists of courses and the curriculum requirements.

Reuse of Courses

Out of the total credits required by the minor program, at least 9 credits should be single-counted within the minor and are not used to fulfill any other requirements for graduation except the 120-credit degree requirement.

Credit Transfer

Students are also allowed to transfer a maximum of 2 courses to fulfill the minor program requirement.

Graduation Requirement

To graduate from the Minor in Business program, students must complete the program requirements and attain an average grade of at least 1.85 among all courses that they have taken within the minor program.

Application

Procedure

If you are eligible for the Business Minor Program and are interested in enrolling, please follow the procedures below:

  1. Apply online (click here) AND
  2. Upload latest transcript showing CGA as of spring semester 2024 and completed Declaration of Undergraduate Minor Program Form (RR-37)

Note: The application process is carried out once a year. If you have missed the application period, you may try again next year.

Results

Application results will be annouced on our website in July.

To opt out

If you have enrolled in the Business Minor Program but wish to opt out, you can do so before the last day of the add/drop period of your 1st term in your final year of study.

Minor in Entrepreneurship

The Minor Program in Entrepreneurship is jointly offered by the School of Science, Engineering and the School of Business & Management. This Minor Program is designed mainly for engineering, business and science students, but is also open to all students to apply. Any undergraduate students with an overall CGA of 2.7 or above may enroll in this Minor Program.

Minor in Psychological and Behavioral Science

The Minor in Psychological and Behavioral Science is jointly offered by the School of Humanities and Social Science and School of Business & Management. Any undergraduate students who have completed at least two regular terms of study with a CGA of 2.3 or above may enroll in the minor program. They must declare their intention to enroll in the program during the application period conducted in June every year no later than the commencement of their final year of study. Students who wish to withdraw from the minor program should apply before the last day of the add/drop period in the first regular term of their final year of study.
